7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit… Fortitude

These Gifts are for YOU!

In the previous posts I talked about the Gifts of Wisdom, Understanding, and Counsel…

(1) Wisdom = the desire for the things of God, and to direct our whole life and all our actions to His honor and glory

I did some extensive research on the subject of Wisdom and what the Church and Sacred Scripture has to say about this particular gift that – appropriately so – is the FIRST gift of the Seven Gifts…

The writers of, “Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, The Song of Songs, Wisdom, and Sirach. The writers of the Sapiential Books consider wisdom in its relation to man as the perfection of knowledge showing itself in action.emphasis added…

(2)Understanding – enables us to know more clearly the mysteries of faith

The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches…

The Holy Spirit gives a spiritual understanding of the Word of God to those who read or hear it, according to the dispositions of their hearts. By means of the words, actions, and symbols that form the structure of a celebration, the Spirit puts both the faithful and the ministers into a living relationship with Christ, the Word and Image of the Father, so that they can live out the meaning of what they hear, contemplate, and do in the celebration. ~ CCC§1101, emphasis added

When worshiping God and His Son, those who receive this gift of UNDERSTANDING are more able to give 100% of themselves because they KNOW WHO they are worshiping.  They KNOW WHY they are worshiping.  And their lives begin to REFLECT that UNDERSTANDING in what they say and do.

(3) Counsel – warns us of the deceits of the devil, and of the dangers to salvation.

“The gift of counsel enables one to judge promptly and correctly what action is to be taken in a particular case… the gift of counsel enables one to decide by a sort of supernatural intuition the correct course of action.” ~Encyclopedia Dictionary of the Bible, Welcome to the Catholic Church, CD-ROM, emphasis added

Today we will speak about FORTITUDE…

(3) Fortitude – strengthen us to do the will of God in all things …

Fortitude (sometimes called strength, courage, or might) is also one of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. ~Glossary, Catechism of the Catholic Church

Though there is not much to be said about Fortitude – probably because the word speaks for itself – it is important to note when Fortitude is addressed in the Faith and for what purpose…

During the Rite of Confirmation…

…the bishop extends his hands over the whole group of the confirmands. Since the time of the apostles this gesture has signified the gift of the Spirit. The bishop invokes the outpouring of the Spirit in these words:

All-powerful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, by water and the Holy Spirit You freed your sons and daughters from sin and gave them new life. Send Your Holy Spirit upon them to be their Helper and Guide. Give them the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of right judgment and courage, the spirit of knowledge and reverence.  Fill them with the spirit of wonder and awe in Your presence.  We ask this through Christ our Lord

~CCC1299, emphasis added.

Also, Fortitude is also one of the 4 Cardinal Virtues.  In the Book of Wisdom, King Solomon speaks on this with regards to the one who gives this virtue – namely Wisdom, which, remember is the FIRST of all 7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit:

“For she is instructress in the understanding of God, the selector of His works.  And if riches be a desirable possession in life, what is more rich than Wisdom, who produces all things?

And if prudence renders service, who in the world is a better craftsman than she?  Or if one loves justice, the fruits of her works are virtues; For she teaches moderation and prudence, justice and fortitude, and nothing in life is more useful for men than these.” ~Wisdom 8: 4-7

Adding another complement to the first three gifts, Fortitude brings with it more of the Holy Spirit

“…as it is written, ‘What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man conceived, what God has prepared for those who love Him,’ God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.” ~1Cor 2: 9-10
