7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit… Counsel

Will you receive His Gifts?

In the previous two posts I talked about the Gifts of WISDOM and UNDERSTANDING…

(1) Wisdom = the desire for the things of God, and to direct our whole life and all our actions to His honor and glory

I did some extensive research on the subject of Wisdom and what the Church and Sacred Scripture has to say about this particular gift that – appropriately so – is the FIRST gift of the Seven Gifts…

The writers of, “Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, The Song of Songs, Wisdom, and Sirach. The writers of the Sapiential Books consider wisdom in its relation to man as the perfection of knowledge showing itself in action.emphasis added…

(2)Understanding – enables us to know more clearly the mysteries of faith

The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches…

The Holy Spirit gives a spiritual understanding of the Word of God to those who read or hear it, according to the dispositions of their hearts. By means of the words, actions, and symbols that form the structure of a celebration, the Spirit puts both the faithful and the ministers into a living relationship with Christ, the Word and Image of the Father, so that they can live out the meaning of what they hear, contemplate, and do in the celebration. ~ CCC§1101, emphasis added

When worshiping God and His Son, those who receive this gift of UNDERSTANDING are more able to give 100% of themselves because they KNOW WHO they are worshiping.  They KNOW WHY they are worshiping.  And their lives begin to REFLECT that UNDERSTANDING in what they say and do.

Today the GIFT is COUNSEL…

(3) Counsel – warns us of the deceits of the devil, and of the dangers to salvation.

“The gift of counsel enables one to judge promptly and correctly what action is to be taken in a particular case… the gift of counsel enables one to decide by a sort of supernatural intuition the correct course of action.” ~Encyclopedia Dictionary of the Bible, Welcome to the Catholic Church, CD-ROM, emphasis added

Those who have come before us remind us…

“Recall then that you have received the spiritual seal, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of right judgment and courage, the spirit of knowledge and reverence, the spirit of holy fear in God’s presence.

Guard what you have received. God the Father has marked you with His sign; Christ the Lord has confirmed you and has placed His pledge, the Spirit, in your hearts.” ~St. Ambrose (340-397), Bishop and Confessor, emphasis added

Remember, once again what the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches…

The moral life of Christians is sustained by the gifts of the Holy Spirit. These are permanent dispositions which make man docile in following the promptings of the Holy Spirit. ~ CCC1830, emphasis added.

Sacred Scripture also tells us…

“This also comes from the LORD of hosts; He is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in wisdom.” ~Isaiah 28:29

“I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go; I will counsel you with My eye upon you.”  ~Psalm 32:8

And what happens to those who refuse His Gift of counsel?

“Then they will call upon Me, but I will not answer; they will seek Me diligently but will not find Me.

Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the LORD, would have none of My counsel, and despised all My reproof,

Therefore they shall eat the fruit of their way and be sated with their own devices.~ Proverbs 1: 28-31

And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a base mind and to improper conduct. They were filled with all manner of wickedness, evil, covetousness, malice. Full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malignity, they are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless.  ~ Romans 1: 28-21, emphasis added

Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator ~Romans 1: 24-25, emphasis added

Thus I conclude with the words of King David, who knew how GOOD and FAITHFUL God is to those who would receive His counsel…

“Thou dost guide me with Thy counsel, and afterward Thou wilt receive me to glory. Whom have I in heaven but Thee? And there is nothing upon earth that I desire besides Thee. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” ~ Psalm 73: 24-26

May we be ever so wise to follow King David’s example in good counsel.
