Week 2, Day 7 of 40…

40 Days in the Desert

Updated February 25, 2018

Morning Prayer: Tuesday, Week I of Lent: Reading: Joel 2: 12-13 (emphasis added)

Return to Me with your whole heart, with fasting, and weeping, and mourning;  Rend your hearts, not your garments, and return to the Lord, your God.  For gracious and merciful is He, slow to anger, rich in kindness, and relenting in punishment.

The Word of the Lord… Thanks be to God!

LOVE is patient and kind; LOVE is not jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude… it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right. LOVE bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. ~1Cor 13: 4-5, 6-7 (emphasis added)

for God is LOVE. In this the LOVE of God was made manifest among us, that God sent His only Son into the world, so that we might live through Him. In this is LOVE, not that we loved God but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the expiation for our sins. ~1Jn 4: 8b-9 (emphasis added)

For God so LOVED the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. ~Jn 3: 16-17 (emphasis added)

“Jesus came not just to save us from our sin; He came to give us new life as well…He came to make us into a new creation!” ~The Word Among Us, Lenten Issue, 2012; The Gospel, What Is it?

Originally published: Mar 16, 2011

A most amazing lesson was presented to me, TWICE, on the First Sunday of Lent.  First in a devotional I am reading and then, second, in a series of sermons that I received from a very holy priest/monk who is a product of the Boy’s Town system and travels about establishing monasteries across the country, Fr Clifford Stevens.

In both sources, the connection is drawn between the fall of Adam and Eve and the faithfulness of Jesus during His temptation at the end of the 40 days.  Let me show you what I mean…

Now the serpent was more cunning than all the rest…

[Satan] said to the woman, “Did God say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree of the garden’?”  …the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden; but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden…lest you die’.” ~Gen 3: 1-3

Eating…does this sound familiar?

The devil said to Him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become bread.” ~Luke 1:3

Okay, both are tempted to eat.  The woman has her choice of the finest fruits.  After all, she is in the Garden of Eden (Heaven on Earth!).  So why would she need to eat something God has asked her not to eat?

Why, when Jesus has fasted for 40 days to prepare Himself to face the great tempter, would Jesus need to break that fast just to prove to Satan who He is?

So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, and he ate. ~Gen 3:6

Woman and Man ate – side note: if she turned and gave the fruit to her husband (Adam), then he had to be standing right there, heard all that the serpent said, and did nothing to prevent the disobedience. HE WANTED IT JUST AS MUCH AS HER.  Thus ALL of mankind fell at this very moment because of  disobedience.

Now let’s see what Obedience looks like:

And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone’.” ~Luke 4:1

When looking up that reference we are reminded of the continuation of that writing found in the Torah (of which Jesus is quoting), in the book of Deuteronomy, chapter 8, verse 3c:

…but that man lives by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the Lord.

The above verse will become very important at the end…

The woman saw that the tree was good for food…

But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not die…” ~Gen 3:4

Kind of like saying, “God really doesn’t know what He’s talking about!” OR “God just said that so you wouldn’t eat His fruit”.

Now, what does Satan say to Jesus regarding God’s sovereignty?

“If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here; for it is written, ‘He will give His angels charge of you, to guard you’. And ‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’ ” ~Luke 4:9b

So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, and he ate. ~Gen 3:6

Eve and Adam both ate of the fruit…they TESTED their God because they believed the serpent, a fellow creature, over their CREATOR!  Kind of like saying, “See God!  We know better than You!” Now they have ARROGANCE (aka Pride) to join their DISOBEDIENCE.

But Jesus responds differently. He responds with Humility…

“It is said, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’ ” ~Luke 4:12

Hmm, I guess that means…

…and you will be like God…

THIRD TEMPTATION: Satan keeps on pressing…

For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” ~Gen 3:5

Kind of like saying…

“To you I will give all this authority and their glory; for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will.  If you, then, will worship me, it shall be yours.” ~Luke 4: 6-7

Satan promises that Adam and Eve that they “will be like God“, and to Jesus (who IS God) that He’ll have dominion over all the kingdoms of the earth (never minding that Jesus already possesses this simply because HE IS GOD).

So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, and he ate. ~Gen 3:6

BOTH  Adam and Eve wanted to be like God, both wanted the power, the knowledge and…what?  DOMINION?  They already had this:

Then God said, “Let us make man in Our image, after Our likeness; then let them HAVE DOMINION over the fish of the sea [Yes, Bruce, Man does ‘own’ the ocean and all the fish in it], and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over ALL THE EARTH, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.” ~Gen 1:26 (emphasis added; catch the movie reference?)

So if the Man and Woman already have DOMINION over God’s creation, why do they think they will get more by disobeying God?  Again, referring to the post on Ash Wednesday, Satan CANNOT give what Satan DOES NOT have!

Adam and Eve gave up EVERYTHING to believe A LIE, from the father of lies (cf Lk 8:44c), and ate of the fruit God had forbidden them to eat.  DISOBEDIENCE…IGNORANCE.

God SAID they would “die” if they ate of the fruit.  But they CHOSE NOT to LISTEN to the WORD of GOD, thus in their disobedience, arrogance, and ignorance they were BANISHED from the sight of the Lord – OUT OF THE GARDEN OF EDEN – which is separation from God – ETERNAL DEATH.  Spiritually, they DID DIE.

Think WE are any different today?  Think again!

Now the response that is made with OBEDIENCE, HUMILITY, and… WISDOM…

“It is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve.’ ”~Luke 4:8

Jesus displays not only OBEDIENCE and HUMILITY, but also WISDOM in knowing that it is BEST TO LOVE GOD and NOT EMPTY PROMISES.  Thus the “angles ministered to Him” (cf Mark 1:13c),  after Satan departed and “Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee…” (cf Lk 4:14), to begin His public ministry.

JESUS = OBEDIENCE, HUMILITY, WISDOM = Living in union with God

Now, which one do YOU want to follow?

Luke 4:16-21

Remember that reference to the Torah Jesus made, about man living “on every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord”? Well you have two examples of what that means.  The first is the example of DEATH, Adam and Eve’s DISOBEDIENCE, as a result of NOT LISTENING to the “Words of the Lord”, while the other is an example of LIVING because of Jesus’ OBEDIENCE to God’s words.

For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect was tempted as we are, yet without sin. ~Hebrews 4:15

The question YOU just need to ask yourself is:  Will I be obedient this moment and LISTEN to the voice of the Lord, or will I turn my back on Him and do my own will (disobedience), because really, I do know what is best! (Arrogance…Pride)

Personally, I would rather LISTEN to the voice of the Lord so that I may gain HUMILITY, WISDOM, and learn OBEDIENCE in the process.  Thus…

WEEK 2, DAY 7 of Lent:

Remember that list of 5 things you made last week?  For the first week you chose ONE (1) thing and asked God to Bless Me and Make Me Holy every time you found yourself doing that ONE (1) thing.  Well, this week you are going to add your SECOND (2nd) thing.  As you did last week, continue to repeat for your one thing, but when you find yourself doing your SECOND (2nd) THING…STOP!… take a deep breath and say: Lord, I can do nothing without YOU. Bless Me and Make Me Holy.

Humility is the KEY for this week.  For with Humility comes Wisdom and Wisdom always encourages us to seek the Will of God which will always demonstrate OBEDIENCE.  Thus making us more and more like Christ as we progress towards Holiness. Lord, I can do nothing without YOU.  Bless Me and Make Me Holy.

Speak with WORDs of Love: Father in Heaven, You know how much I struggle to be obedient and  to do Your Will.  Help me to strive to better this week than I did last week.  Help me to Love You with all my heart, all my soul, and all my strength.  For I can do NOTHING without You!  Have mercy, and Bless me, Oh my Lord, Jesus.  Amen!

Empty me, Oh Lord in HUMILITY and fill me with Your Charity.

Coming Soon Study, Chapter 9, Part III – The Dragon…

Posted by Anne Elizabeth on June 10, 2013

Do not conform yourselves to this age...

Do not conform yourselves to this age…

CHRISTIAN PRAYER: Monday Evening Prayer: READING: Romans 12: 1-2 (emphasis added)

Brothers [and sisters], I beg you through the mercy of God to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice holy and acceptable to God, your spiritual worship.

Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, so that you may judge what is God’s Will, what is good, pleasing and perfect.

The Word of the Lord … Thanks be to God!

RESPONSORY: To you, O Lord, I make my prayer for MERCY!

Index of Terms

The Dragon: Rev 12: 3-4 (emphasis added)

Revelation 12: 3 “And another [sign] appeared in heaven; behold, a great red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns, and seven diadems upon his heads. His tail swept down a third of the stars of heaven, and cast them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to bear a child, that he might devour her child when she brought it forth…

Boy is this passage jam-packed with meaning!  Let’s look at it first from the OBVIOUS and then delve a little deeper into its connection to the time of Christ and His birth to the connection with the Year 70, and then of course to our own day.  Yeah, lot’s to cover!

The Red Dragon = Satan = the ancient Leviathan also mentioned by Isaiah…

In that day of the Lord with His hard and great and strong sword will punish Leviathan, the fleeing serpent, and He will slay the dragon that is in the sea.” (Isaiah 27:1, emphasis added)

**Something to REMEMBER – in the OT whenever the “sea” represents the
Gentile Nations while the “land” represents Israel **

Like Revelation 12, the Leviathan in Isaiah 27 is described as a ‘dragon’ (Is 27:1; Rev 12:3) and a ‘serpent’ (Is 27:1; Rev 12:9).  Although Isaiah does not mention the number of his heads, the Leviathan was commonly known in the Bible and ancient literature as having multiple heads (cf. Ps. 74:14).” (Barber, 156)

This dragon also had “seven diadems upon its head ”, indicating that he is the…

…chief fallen angel, since the diadems were understood as crowns of antiquity.” (Ibid.)

Because we know that “falling stars” represent fallen angels throughout John’s book, and that chief angel did sweep, “down a third of the stars of heaven”, we know then these “third of the stars” are those angels that followed Satan in his rebellion.  Not to mention a little later in this same chapter we hear of how Michael and his angels defeated the dragon with those afore mentioned angels…

And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world–he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.” (Rev 12:9, emphasis added)

"And this will be a sign for you..."

“And this will be a sign for you…”

Revelation 12:4b “And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to bear a child, that he might devour her child when she brought it forth.”

Okay, let’s break this down… FIRST, WHO is the “child”?

Then WHO is the woman?

Jesus’ mother, MARY…

At the time of Christ’s birth, who sought to destroy the child of Mary?

King Herod

"When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled... Mt 2:3a

“When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled… Mt 2:3a

**Remember, Sacred Scripture is the LIVING, BREATHING, and UNCHANGING WORD OF GOD and has MANY LAYERS to it that represents eternity and ALL that eternity contains.**

Now, King Herod was NOT A JEW.  Nope, he was an Edomite (cf. Gen 25: 25, 30), and the literal translation for Edom is RED.

We’ve already stated that the presence of the “seven diadems” speaks of royal authority, which Herod had by his appointment…

Herod’s kingship, then, is the antithesis, the very opposite, of Christ’s.  Herod gained his throne through murder, was not the rightful heir to the throne, and established an earthly temple… Herod represents everything that must be destroyed when the new creation is ushered in.” (Barber, 157)

he was a murder from the beginning, and has nothing to do with the truth because there is no truth in him.  When he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” (Jn 8:44, a description of Satan – a good parallel, no?)

And we know from Sacred Scripture that he sought the life of the Christ Child – that is Jesus…

Herod summoned the wise men secretly… and he sent them to Bethlehem saying, ‘Go and search diligently for the child, and when you find him, bring me word so I too may worship him’ … When Herod saw that he had been tricked by the wise men [two years later], was in a furious rage, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and that region who were TWO YEARS OLD and UNDER…(Mt 2:7, 8, 16, emphasis added)

A little later in Revelation 12 we read…

And when the dragon saw that he had been thrown down to the earth, he pursued the woman who had borne the male child. But the woman was given the two wings of the great eagle that she might fly from the serpent into the wilderness, to the place where she is to be nourished for a time, and times, and half a time.” (Rev 12: 13-14)

Before Herod could carry out his plot to kill all male children two and under, what happened in Nazareth?

The Angel of the Lord came to Joseph in a dream...

The Angel of the Lord came to Joseph in a dream…

“…behold, and angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, ‘Rise, take the Child and His mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there till I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the Child, to destroy Him.’  And he rose and took the Child and His mother by night and departed to Egypt, and remained there until the death of Herod.” (Mt 2: 13-15, emphasis added)

Their time in Egypt is believed to be about three and a half years because Tradition tells us, with Sacred Scripture, that Herod killed boys 2yrs old and younger, and it was 1 ½ years later when Herod died and his son assumed the throne that God called Joseph and his family out of Egypt…

But when Herod died, behold an Angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph… saying, ‘Rise and take the Child and His mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the Child’s life are dead.” (Lk 2: 19, 20)

Barber points out one more historical connection with the flight of Israel out of Egypt…

Yet, it also recalls Israel, who fled into the desert to escape Pharaoh.  In fact, Psalm 74: 12-14 compares the defeat of Pharaoh at the parting of the Red Sea to the defeat of the Leviathan.

He further points out that these…

“…two interpretations are not exclusive of each other, since the events in the life of Jesus are presented as the true fulfillment of Old Testament accounts. Thus, just as Jesus escaped Herod, Israel escaped Pharaoh.” (Barber, 157, emphasis added)

...there will not be left here one stone upon another... Mt 24:2

…there will not be left here one stone upon another… Mt 24:2

A couple of no-brainer connections here…

One: As the destruction of the city of Jerusalem began by the Roman soldiers, Christians fled into the wilderness to escape and seek refuge in the mountains…

Indeed, the Church fled into the wilderness and found refuge on Pella during the siege of Jerusalem.” (Barber, 158)

Two: God once again provided protection for His children, just as He did for the Hebrews in their 40 years in the desert after escaping from Egypt.  We also know from historical accounts that this particular war with Rome lasted three and a half years.

Also a no brainer!  The increase of chaos and the unreasonable has occurred exponentially in just under a decade.  What was thought of as ‘unheard of’ is now acceptable.  What was once thought of as moral is now ‘intolerable’.

“And we are shocked when we hear about copy-cat school and random shootings? When we hear about soldiers taking innocent lives? When we see more and more young parents committing infanticide? Are we really that stupid—are we this naive? Yes, because people are generally more interested in watching mindless television than falling to their knees and asking God to fill the gnawing vacuum in their hearts. Perhaps the reason they don’t is because the Western Church has fallen mostly silent, not only on the disturbing moral issues of our day, thereby providing almost no guiding moral light in the darkness, but on the need to “repent and believe the Good News.” There is a Great Vacuum indeed, and it is being filled with the spirit of the world.” (Mark Mallett, Wisdom and the Convergence of Chaos)

We live in a time of confusion when man has deluded himself to believe that he is God and there is no right or wrong, no absolute truth. Hmmm, sound familiar???

Before Christ’s second coming the Church must pass through a final trial that will shake the faith of many believers

The persecution that accompanies her pilgrimage on earth will unveil the “mystery of iniquityin the form of a religious deception offering men an apparent solution to their problems at the price of apostasy from the truth.

The supreme religious deception is that of the Antichrist, a pseudo messianism by which man glorifies himself in place of God and of His Messiah come in the flesh. ~CCC§675 (emphasis added)

Why all of this?  How is it that we can be so easily deceived?

But woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!” (Rev 12:12b)

The coming of the lawless one by the activity of Satan will be with all power and with pretended signs and wonders…

and with all wicked deception for those who are to perish, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.

Therefore God sends upon them a strong delusion, to make them believe what is false, so that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.” (2Thess 2: 9-12, emphasis added)

We have sinned and are in bondage to our sin...

We have sinned and are in bondage to our sin…

Judgment, plain and simple.  We [mankind] have sinned – killing of the unborn, the weak, the aged; gay marriage and promoting homosexuality as normal (I think Sodom did the same thing to, did it not?); taking God from our schools, public squares, churches, and homes and putting man in His place – and we [mankind] have not repented of our evil ways.

So him who hates man because he hates anything God created works diligently to destroy man by all kinds of lies and falsehoods.  Beginning in Genesis, Satan works hard to convince God’s most beloved creation that God in fact does not care for us.  That He despises us and wishes us dead.

If these were not the lies Satan tells why would we kill our young, or old, our unborn, ourselves?

Satan has waged war with the Woman (Eve, and Mary – the New Eve), since the dawn of time when he was cast out of heaven by St. Michael and his angels for trying to replace God (Rev 12: 7-9, 13, 17); he has waged war with God and with His creation.  Like a spoiled child throwing a temper-tantrum, he thinks he will get his way in the end.

Just as in the days of old – God has sent His Son, the Word made flesh, to lead us OUT of darkness and into the LIGHT of His LOVE.  He has given us a holy Mother who will protect her children in the years of trial – just as she herself was protected with the Child Jesus (cf. Mt 2: 13-15, 19-23).  Come to the Sacred Heart of Jesus through the Immaculate Heart of His mother and be safe.

The dragon, the ancient serpent, continues to wage war against those professing FAITH in CHRIST.  Yet even if they should perish for His name, their victory is Heaven’s victory (cf. Rev 12:11), for they reside with Him in His holy temple (Rev 7: 9-17).

When the time comes, they will accompany Him on His return to earth to establish the New Earth and the New Heavens with the New Jerusalem (cf. Mt 24:30; Rev 21)

If YOU want to be a part of this then acknowledge YOUR sin and REPENT with your WHOLE HEART and then make REPARATION!

YOU are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, that YOU may declare the wonderful deeds of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” (1Peter 2:9, emphasis added)

Come Holy Spirit and Fill the Hearts of Your Faithful...

Come Holy Spirit and Fill the Hearts of Your Faithful…

Therefore, seek after holiness!  Run from this corrupt existence and enter into eternal life with the Son…

His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us to His own glory and excellence

…by which He has granted to us His precious and very great promises, that through these you may escape from the corruption that is in the world because of passion, and become partakers of the divine nature.

For this very reason make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love.

For if these things are yours and abound, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.  For whoever lacks these things is blind and shortsighted and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins. (2Peter 1: 3-9, emphasis added)

The Word of the Lord … Thanks be to God!

All that John witnessed, that would apply to the fall of Jerusalem as to our own time, holds true with deep meaning as humanity approaches quickly the time when God will purify the earth, and it will be too late for those have either turned from God and His commandments OR “rode the fence” thinking they had “all the time in the world” to choose their side.

As the “signs of the times” continue to unfold, those who are following the warnings of Christ and are “watching and praying” (Mt 26:41; 24:42; Mk 14:38; 13:33, 35; Lk 22:40; 1Thess 5: 4-6, 8-11; Col 4:2; Eph 6:18; and 1Peter 5:8), will not be caught off guard when the “thief breaks into our house” (cf. Mt 24:43), or asleep when “the Bridegroom comes” (cf. Mt 25: 10-12).

Will this be YOU?  Can you say that you are included in this?  Or will you be like many others who take the easy path and wake up one day eternally separated from the LOVE that is God as they find themselves in eternal torment in Hell.

CHRISTIAN PRAYER: Fourth Sunday of Lent, Evening Prayer I: READING: 2Cor 6: 1-4a (emphasis added)

[Brothers and Sisters,] we beg you not to receive the grace of God in vain.  For He says, “In an acceptable time I have heard you; on a day of salvation I have helped you.”

Now is the acceptable time! Now is the day of salvation! We put no obstacle in any one’s way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, but as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way.

The Word of the Lord … Thanks be to God

RESPONSORY: God Himself will set me free from the hunter’s snare.
