Scriptual Reflection

Posted by Anne Elizabeth on August 23, 2009

As this week and last week progressed…as current events occurred that sent shock waves of concern across America, the following scriptures presented themselves…one by one…right up to today’s Gospel reading.  How well we begin and how ‘wow’ that it connects with more recent posts.

John 15: 5-11

5 I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. 6 If a man does not abide in Me, he is cast forth as a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire and burned.

7 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you will, and it shall be done for you.

8 By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples. 9 As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you; abide in My love.

10 If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.

11 These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

Why is it so important that we abide in His Love and follow His commandments?  Isn’t it enough to perform wonders in His name or preach in His name?  Jesus tells us…

Mt 7: 21-27

21 “Not every one who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven.

22 On that day many will say to Me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and cast out demons in Your name, and do many mighty works in Your name?’

23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you evildoers.’

24 “Every one then who hears these words of Mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house upon the rock; 25 and the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.

The true Rock, the Catholic Church, established by Jesus on the foundation of Peter,

The Pope, Bishop of Rome and Peter’s successor, is the perpetual and visible source and foundation of the unity both of the bishops and of the whole company of the faithful.” For the Roman Pontiff, by reason of his office as Vicar of Christ, and as pastor of the entire Church has full, supreme, and universal power over the whole Church, a power which he can always exercise unhindered.” CCC§882

Those who exercise their faith apart from the Church are not exercising faith at all but their own selfish desires, following in the foot steps of him who is already in the world…

26 And every one who hears these words of Mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house upon the sand; 27 and the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell; and great was the fall of it.”

2 Thes 2: 9-12

9 The coming of the lawless one by the activity of Satan will be with all power and with pretended signs and wonders, 10 and with all wicked deception for those who are to perish, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11 Therefore God sends upon them a strong delusion, to make them believe what is false, 12 so that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

It’s not a baby…its a zygote, a bunch of cells…if you are aged and/or infirm, you’re life is not worth living…if you are sick and in pain you should die to relieve your suffering…sounding familiar? Its part of that universal health care we’re not suppose to talk about…

Romans 1: 28-32

28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a base mind and to improper conduct. 29 They were filled with all manner of wickedness, evil, covetousness, malice. Full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malignity, they are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless.

32 Though they know God’s decree that those who do such things deserve to die, they not only do them but approve those who practice them.

The setting is ripe and the people are ready to accept even worse decrees and declarations than have already been accepted…

Mt. 24:24

24 For false Christs and false prophets will arise and show great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.

John 6: 60-69

60 Many of His disciples, when they heard it, said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?”

61 But Jesus, knowing in Himself that His disciples murmured at it, said to them, “Do you take offense at this? 62 Then what if you were to see the Son of man ascending where He was before?

63 It is the spirit that gives life, the flesh is of no avail; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64 But there are some of you that do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the first who those were that did not believe, and who it was that would betray Him.

65 And He said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to Me unless it is granted him by the Father.

66 After this many of his disciples drew back and no longer went about with him. 67 Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also wish to go away?

68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life; 69 and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”

Do you know that Jesus is the ‘Holy One of God’?  Have you accepted His Kingship?  If not, you might find yourself becoming one of the many spoken of above.  When Christ returns, will He find faith, the Faith He established in His Church with the Rock as it’s foundation?
