Fulton Sheen excerpt… Be Imitators of Christ Post

“We just cannot walk through life into the Kingdom of Heaven.  We have to work out our Salvation; and there will be crosses in our lives that we make through self-denial and mortification, and then there will be other crosses that are imposed on us… Sickness, particularly of children…Now what do we do with crosses?  We have to unite it with Our Lord on the Cross in order to use it to ‘purchase’ our eternal salvation.”

I think this is where most Protestants would throw up their hands and say, “What a minute, now!  What do you mean ‘purchase’ our eternal salvation?  Christ died once and for all!”

Yes, He did.  But no where did He say, “Once saved, always saved.”  In fact, no where in scripture is this even implied.  And if anyone can find it, please send it on to me.

Our Salvation is constant and continuous until the day we cease our life on this good earth.  It must always be strived for in our everyday lives.

As Blessed Mother Teresa has said, “Life is not about the extraordinary, but rather, the doing of the ordinary in an extraordinary way.”

The only thing, ladies and gentlemen, that we are GUARANTEED, is our eternal life.  And that eternal life can be either spent in the company of God, worshiping Him at His throne.  Or eternally separated from God because we have chosen to separate ourselves from Him.

This is why our salvation is achieved by our working for it day by day.  We can choose to separate ourselves from God forever the same as we can choose to be with Him for all eternity.  Jesus’ death won us the ability to choose the latter.

“Therefore gird up your minds, be sober, set your hope fully upon the grace that is coming to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as He who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in all your conduct; since it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy.’” ~1 Peter 1:13-16
