Kenosis Part I: Scripture Passages

Kenosis, Part I:

John 1:1-3,14

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God; all things were made through Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made.

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father.

Gen 3:5

“No, God knows well that the moment you eat of it your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods who know what is good and what is bad.”

Gen 1:26

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.”

Has God ever suffered as we suffer?  See for yourself!

God knows pain:

John 18:22

When He had said this, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with His hand, saying, “Is that how you answer the high priest?”

19:1-2

Then Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him. And the soldiers plaited a crown of thorns, and put it on His head.

Mt 26: 67

Then they spat in His face, and struck Him; and some slapped Him,…

Luke 23:23-33

Two others also, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with Him. And when they came to the place which is called The Skull, there they crucified Him…

Mark 14:65

And some began to spit on Him, and to cover His face, and to strike Him, saying to him, “Prophesy!” And the guards received Him with blows.

Did God ever go without food for more than one day?

Matthew 4:2

And He fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterward He was hungry.

John 4:31-33

Meanwhile the disciples besought him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.”  But he said to them, “I have food to eat of which you do not know.” So the disciples said to one another, “Has any one brought him food?”

God experiences thirst:

John 4:7

There came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.”

Matthew 25:35

…for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink,…

God knows wounds… See ‘God knows pain’

God is mocked and ridiculed

Mt 26:67

“Prophesy to us, you Christ! Who is it that struck you?”

27:27-31

Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the praetorium, and they gathered the whole battalion before Him. And they stripped Him and put a scarlet robe upon Him, and plaiting a crown of thorns they put it on His head, and put a reed in His right hand.

And kneeling before Him they mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they spat upon Him, and took the reed and struck Him on the head. And when they had mocked Him, they stripped Him of the robe, and put His own clothes on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.

39-43

And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, “You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” So also the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked Him, saying,

“He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. He trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he desires him; for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.'”

Luke 23:11

And Herod with his soldiers treated Him with contempt and mocked Him; then, arraying Him in gorgeous apparel, he sent Him back to Pilate.

35-37

And the people stood by, watching; but the rulers scoffed at Him, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself, if He is the Christ of God, His Chosen One!” The soldiers also mocked Him, coming up and offering Him vinegar, and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save Yourself!”

Mark 15: 29-32

And those who passed by derided Him, wagging their heads, and saying, “Aha! You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days, save Yourself, and come down from the cross!”

So also the chief priests mocked Him to one another with the scribes, saying, “He saved others; He cannot save Himself.  Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.”

God ever been exiled?

Mark 15:34

And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Elo-i, Elo-i, lama sabach-thani?” which means, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”

John 1: 11

He came to His own home, and His own people received Him not.

Was God ever in prison?

John 1:1-3, 14

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God; all things were made through Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made.

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father.

Mark 15:1

And as soon as it was morning the chief priests, with the elders and scribes, and the whole council held a consultation; and they bound Jesus and led Him away and delivered Him to Pilate. [Remember, the passage before, it was night and Jesus was questioned by the high priest and council of elders.  He had been arrested so naturally they who had arrested Him placed Jesus in a cell to hold Him over night before taking Him to see Pilate.]
