For the Next Two Weeks…The Fruits of the Holy Spirit…

Posted by Anne Elizabeth on May 11, 2017

12 Fruits?…I don’t think so…

12 FRUITS: AN INTRODUCTION

Did you know there were 12 Fruits of the Holy Spirit?

Huh?  What are you talking about?

Question:  Who IS the Holy Spirit?

Answer: We first learn of God the Holy Spirit, Third Person of the Holy Trinity, in the first book of the Bible…

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.  The earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving over the face of the waters. ~Gen 1: 1-2

King David later writes about the Holy Spirit imploring God not to take Him away…

Do not drive me from Your presence, nor take from me Your Holy Spirit. ~Ps 51:13

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit…Three in One

And the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us…

Through His grace, the Holy Spirit is the first to awaken faith in us and to communicate to us the new life,… ~CCC§684

To believe in the Holy Spirit is to profess that the Holy Spirit is One of the Persons of the Holy Trinity, consubstantial with the Father and the Son: “with the Father and the Son He is worshiped and glorified.” … ~CCC§685

The Holy Spirit is at work with the Father and the Son from the beginning to the completion of the plan for our salvation…  ~CCC§686

Which is why it IS imperative that the Holy Spirit be called upon for US still on our earthly pilgrimage in the Church Militant…

“… But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” ~Acts 1:8

So why wouldn’t this amazing Advocate have gifts just for US, the Children of God?…

When we cry, “Abba! Father!”, it is the Spirit Himself bearing witness with our spirit that we are Children of God,… ~Romans 8: 15c-16

Okay, okay, He probably would.  But why twelve?

Question: How many tribes of Israel are we told of ?

It’s 12!

Answer: That’s right, it’s 12.

Okay, it’s twelve.  What’s your point?

Question: What is significant about these 12 tribes?

Answer: They were CHOSEN BY GOD to be HIS people!

No longer shall your name be Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations

I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come forth from you.

And I will establish my covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your descendants after you.

8 And I will give to you, and to your descendants after you, the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.”

*NOTE: to those who are trying to undo Israel’s State and rightful possession of the land they are currently in, and to those shameful folks who call themselves Christian and are supporting this, *WARNING!*  You are invoking God’s Holy wrath…not a wise thing to do…

Warning taken…but the connection is still unclear

As WE are also the Children of God, then we too have been “grafted onto the vine” that is Israel…

By this power of the Spirit, God’s children can bear much fruit. He who has grafted us onto the true vine [WILL] make us bear “the fruit of the Spirit: . . . love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.” (cf. Gal 5: 22-23).

[The more] “We live by the Spirit”; the more we renounce ourselves, the more we “walk by the Spirit.” (cf. Gal 5:25; Mt 16: 24-26). ~CCC§736

So, as an honorary part of the the 12 tribes of Israel – thus fulfilling the promise of Father Abraham’s descendants to be as “numerous as the sands” (cf. Gen 13:16) –  for without the added family, this would not be true, and God is ALWAYS faithful and TRUE! – we are able to come before the God of Israel, who IS our God and Father, and be made part of the promise of His heavenly kingdom…

Through the Holy Spirit we are restored to paradise, led back to the Kingdom of heaven, and adopted as children, given confidence to call God “Father” and to share in Christ’s grace, called children of light and given a share in eternal glory. ~St. Basil, Bishop, Confessor, and Doctor of the Church, c.329-379.

Twelve Tribes – a complete family – 12 Fruits of the Spirit – a complete way of LIFE and of LIVING HOLINESS…

The moral life of Christians is sustained by the gifts of the Holy Spirit. These are permanent dispositions which make man docile in following the promptings of the Holy Spirit. ~CCC§1830

There is that word again… Holiness … is that what this is all about?

But of course!  Hadn’t I suggested and hadn’t YOU been practicing and/or putting into practice learned Holiness these last 5 weeks of Easter, and before that during the 40 Days of Lent?  It’s all geared to help keep YOU on that path of Holiness that God calls EACH OF US to experience.  And looking at the 12 Fruits of the Spirit, one can see that this is a definite way to continue on that path.

LET US PRAY…

O Holy Spirit, beloved of my soul. I adore You, enlighten me, guide me, strengthen me, console me.  Tell me what I should do.  Give me Your orders.  I promise to submit myself to all that You desire of me, and to accept all that You permit to happen to me.  Let me only know Your Will.

Holy Spirit, send forth the Twelve Fruits of  Your Spirit (Gal 5: 22-23) , renew and burn into our hearts their virtues so that we may bear the good fruit of which they produce:

1. Charity – Cause us to perform our actions out of love for God
2. JoyKeeps us happily aware of God’s infinite goodness
3. Peace – Results from joy and renders us tranquil
4. Patience – Resigns us to endure the disagreeable circumstance of life and the
suffering of deaths

5. Goodness – Inclines us to wish to do good to everyone without distinction
6. Benignity – Results from goodness; it is goodness in words and actions
7. Long Suffering – Preserves patience over a long period of time, even though no
encouragement is to be seen
8. Mildness – Restrain our angers

9. Faith – Makes one faithful and upright in dealing with others
10. Modesty – Produces moderation in external actions
11. Continence – Restrains illicit passion and assists in self control
12. Chastity – Helps one guard his/her senses so that they will not cause him/her to sin;
it helps one regard his/her own body and those of others as temple of the Holy Spirit

The fruits of the Spirit are perfections that the Holy Spirit forms in us as the first fruits of eternal glory.

“The tradition of the Church lists twelve of them: “charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control, chastity (Gal 5: 22-23) ~CCC§1832

Now, take four at a time for the next four days and START putting them into PRACTICE.

Awwh, Man!  I knew there’d be some kind of homework… 🙂

Most certainly!

This Week…The Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit…

Posted by Anne Elizabeth on May 1, 2017

All for Mary! ... All for the Glory of God!

All for Mary! … All for the Glory of God!

Week 4 Reflection, click HERE …

*****

Come Holy Spirit...

Come Holy Spirit…

Pentecost Sunday is the day when Jesus sent the promise of the Father on Mary and the 11 Apostles plus other disciples gathered in that upper room where, just days before, the Risen Lord instructed them to remain…

And while staying with them He charged them not depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which He said, “you heard from Me, for John baptized with water, but before many days you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” ~Acts 1: 4-5

And so they DID and so they RECEIVED the promised gift – The Holy Spirit – and the age of evangelization began.  They received the 12 Fruits of the Spirit and also the 7 Gifts of the Spirit…which is what concerns US today and for the rest of this Novena to the Holy Spirit.

We learned in the Catechism of the Catholic Church that…

The fruits of the Spirit are perfections that the Holy Spirit forms in us as the first fruits of eternal glory. ~ CCC§1832

That same Catechism also teaches us…

The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit…belong in their fullness to Christ, Son of David (cf. Is 11: 1-2). They complete and perfect the virtues of those who receive them. They make the faithful docile in readily obeying divine inspirations. ~CCC§1831

These gifts are full…complete…perfect in their makeup especially when aiding those who receive them to persevere in their faith, achieving holiness and sanctity in their lives.  Did you know the use of the number seven is also used through scripture as a means of perfection?…

We have 7 days of Creation (Gen 1 & 2) in which God pronounced it “GOOD” and with the creation of man “VERY GOOD”. The Passover is celebrated in 7 Days (Numb 28:16) – which we already discussed was a prefigurement of the Holy Eucharist when God Himself provided His Only Son for the “spotless Lamb”.

Even in the book of Revelation, the last judgments on mankind are perfect in order of seven (Rev 21:9).   Each one of these entries speaks of a perfection, a completeness in the plan of God ordained before time began.  A reminder that God is in the middle of everything and nothing happens without His “say so”.

We too should ask the question, “Does God live in the center of my heart?” If the answer is anything other than YES, then we need to get crackin’ to puttn’ God back into the center of our Hearts.  The novena to the Holy Spirit and the added reflections on the Fruits and Gifts of the Spirit are intended to help the reader do just that!

So here is the list, out of order, because I intend to draw the reader’s attention to the those gifts which compliment one another and reflect beautifully one or more of the 12 Fruits.

All 7 Gifts... Will YOU receive them?

All 7 Gifts… Will YOU receive them?

WE BEGIN… and in a particular order rather than the usual:

(1) Wisdom = the desire for the things of God, and to direct our whole life and all our actions to His honor and glory (Thurs, April 9th)

CONNECTS TO : FAITH, CHARITY and CHASTITY…

…faithful to the dignity of man, performing our actions out of LOVE for God, guarding our senses so that we do not sin…

(5) Knowledge = enable us to discover the Will of God in all things (Mon, April 11th)

CONNECTS TO: PATIENCE and LONG SUFFERING…

…resigns us to endure the disagreeable and preserves patience over a long period of time even though encouragement is no where to be seen…

(4) Fortitude = strengthen us to do the Will of God in all things (Wed, April 13th)

CONNECTS TO : GOODNESS, BENIGNITY, and FAITH…

…inclines us to wish good to all without distinction, in both our actions and words, always keeping us upright in our dealings with others…

These three gifts are the desire, the knowledge AND the strength required by souls that seek after holiness and communion with the God of the Universe if they are to succeed and reach our Heavenly Homeland.  So let us be humble and ASK the Holy Spirit to rain down these gifts!

THE NEXT THAT FOLLOWS…

(6) Piety = is to love God as a Father, and we obey Him because we love Him (Friday, April 15th)

CONNECTS TO : CHARITY, JOY, and PEACE…

…helps us perform our every action out of LOVE for God, keeping us happily aware of His infinite goodness, which renders us tranquil and happy…

(7) Fear of the Lord = have a dread of sin and because we fear offending God (Sun, April 17th)

CONNECTS TO : CONTINENCE…

…represses our passions which cause us to sin…

(3) Counsel = warn us of the deceits of the devil, and of the dangers to salvation (Tue, April 19th)

CONNECTS TO : MILDNESS, MODESTY, and CHASTITY…

…restrains our anger and produces moderation in external actions, guarding our senses lest we sin against God in mind and body…

Desiring these gifts we have the courage to pray…

O Holy Spirit, beloved of my soul. I adore You, enlighten me, guide me, strengthen me, console me.  Tell me what I should do.  Give me Your orders.  I promise to submit myself to all that You desire of me, and to accept all that You permit to happen to me.  Let me only know Your Will.

LASTLY BUT NOT LEASTLY…

The final gift of the Holy Spirit is…

(2) Understanding = Which enables us to know more clearly the mysteries of faith (Thur, Apr 21st)

CONNECTS TO : JOY AND PEACE

…keeps us aware of God’s infinite goodness that helps us remain tranquil and happy in our every day lives…

With that we pray…

O Holy Spirit, beloved of my soul. I adore You, enlighten me, guide me, strengthen me, console me.  Tell me what I should do.  Give me Your orders.  I promise to submit myself to all that You desire of me, and to accept all that You permit to happen to me.  Let me only know Your Will.

With that I close with the words of an early Church Father, St. Ambrose…

Recall then that you have received the spiritual seal, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of right judgment and courage, the spirit of knowledge and reverence, the spirit of holy fear in God’s presenceGod the Father has marked you with His sign; Christ the Lord has confirmed you and has placed His pledge, the Spirit, in your hearts.

GUARD WHAT YOU HAVE RECEIVED.

~St. Ambrose, Bishop and Confessor, c.340-397.

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful, and en-kindle in them the fire of Your Love, send forth Your Spirit and they shall be created, and You will renew the face of the earth!

LET’S GO!  FIRST GIFT – WISDOM…
