Living in the Two Hearts

My Spiritual Insights and Musings

The Passion of the Christ…

Though I enjoy this film immensely, and watch it every Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and then Resurrection Sunday, I always keep in mind that it’s not quite accurate on three counts. Minor details, to be sure, but still…

  1. Mary Magdalene WAS NOT the woman caught in Adultry.  She was a Demoniac… Lk 8:2 … who was cured by Jesus and thus dedicated her wealth to the support of Jesus’ ministry… Lk 8:1-3… But SHE WAS devoted to His mother, Mary, as Magdalene WAS THERE at the foot of the Cross.

The matter of Jesus Garments…

2. Jesus garments were not “ripped” from His body in a manner that destroyed them.  For scripture tells us…

And when they had crucified him, they divided his garments among them by casting lots; ~Mt 27:35; cf Mk 15:24; Lk 23: 34b; and my personal favorite…

When the soldiers had crucified Jesus they took His garments and made four parts, one for each soldier; also His tunic.

But the tunic was without seam, woven from top to bottom;  so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the scripture, “They parted my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” ~Jn 19: 23-24, the first person account as John WAS THERE!

It could be that, due to the complexity of the makeup and the removal of a garment without a seam over a very complex crown of thorns – of which Mel’s art department did an excellent job recreating; to remove Jim’s garment over his head would have proven near impossible and a major hassle. Hence the reason for the tearing?

3. Jesus speaking to the Women… Scripture tells us that as Jesus carried His cross He encountered women who were weeping for Him.  Seeing them thus, Jesus says, “Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for Me, but for yourselves and for your children…” Lk 23:27

In the film they are just seen weeping and lamenting Jesus’ plight. Again, possibly another technical matter that would have hindered the film time or something akin to that. Only the production staff knows the reason.

Though despite these three inconsistencies with Sacred Scripture, the film is still more than worth the watch! I hope everyone has a chance to see it and maybe consider making it a part of their Passion Friday keeping in mind those few, minor details.
