A Lesson in Sacred Scripture…Part III

Thanks be to God!

Friday Evening Prayer, Week II, Reading: 1 Cor 2: 6-10a (emphasis added)

There is a certain wisdom which we express among the spiritually matureIt is not a wisdom of this age, however, nor of the rulers of this age, who are men headed for destruction

No, what we utter is God’s wisdom: a mysterious, a hidden wisdom.  God planned it before all ages for our glory.  None of the rulers of this age knew the mystery; if they had known it, they would never have crucified the Lord of glory.

Of this wisdom it is written: “Eye has not see, ear has not heard, nor has it so much as dawned on man what God has prepared for those who love Him.”  Yet God has revealed this wisdom to us through the Spirit.

The word of the Lord…Thanks be to God!

“…there is NO PROPHECY contained in Scripture which is a PERSONAL INTERPRETATION...” ~2Peter 1:20

BOTH Tradition AND Sacred Scripture ~ Good Theology!

The task of giving an authentic interpretation of the Word of God, whether in its written form or in the form of Tradition, has been entrusted to the living, teaching office of the Church alone.

Its authority in this matter is exercised in the name of Jesus Christ.” This means that the task of interpretation has been entrusted to the bishops in communion with the successor of Peter, the Bishop of Rome. (emphasis added) ~ CCC§85

Here is where Martin Luther and those who followed after him lost sight of the TRUTH when they thought they could do better…

“Yet this Magisterium is not superior to the Word of God, BUT IS ITS SERVANT. It teaches only what has been handed on to it. At the divine command and with the help of the Holy Spirit, it listens to this devotedly, guards it with dedication, and expounds it faithfully. All that it proposes for belief as being divinely revealed is drawn from this single deposit of faith.” (emphasis added) ~ CCC§86

When the reader takes Sacred Scripture out of context, they miss the BIG PICTURE of Jesus’ message found in St. Mathew’s Gospel, Chapter 24…

2 Timothy 3:16...

Signs and Events: Verses 6-8 : Wars, rumors of wars, nations rising against nations, famines and earthquakes in various places…  nothing we have not witnessed over the last 2000 years, and certainly in the last several years.

Tribulation will follow: Verses 9-12: Those who hold to the Christian message will be turned over to the authorities – some put to death – all hated by the nations for the message they witness to…

“If the world hates you, know that it hated Me before it hated you.” ~Jn 15:18

“If they persecuted Me, they will persecute you…But all this they will do to you on My account, because they do not know Him who sent Me.” ~Jn 15:21, 22

Verses 9-12 cont… : Many will fall away and betray one another; False prophets will arise and lead others astray; Wickedness will be multiplied (gay marriage, explicit sex education for K-2nd grade, loss of religious freedom…etc, etc, etc…). Because of this wickedness, man’s love will grow cold.

And of the days of tribulation Christ says…

“For there will be great tribulation such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be.  And if those days had not been shortened, no human being would be saved; but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened.” (emphasis added) ~Mt. 24: 21-22

This is the important verse that corresponds DIRECTLY with the underlined verse above…

“But he who endures to the end will be saved.” (emphasis added) ~Mt. 24: 13

Before Christ’s second coming the Church must pass through a final trial that will shake the faith of many believersThe persecution that accompanies her pilgrimage on earth(emphasis added) ~CCC§675

Thus, in Christ’s own words, and confirmed by the teaching magisterium of His Church (aka Bishops – direct decedents of the Apostles – in union with the Bishop of Rome = the Pope – successor of Peter), the idea of the Rapture is just that – a man made idea…or even more importantly – ANOTHER GOSPEL…

"...but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God." 2Peter 19:21c

“…because NO PROPHECY has ever come by THE IMPULSE OF MAN, BUT men MOVED BY the Holy Spirit SPOKE from God.
~2Peter 1:21

St. Paul has cried out WARNING after WARNING that ALL Christians should always be aware of PROPHECY that comes only FROM MAN and not from God…

But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ.

For if someone comes and preaches another Jesus than the one we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or if you accept a different gospel from the one you accepted, you submit to it readily enough. (emphasis added) ~2Cor 11: 3-4

And did not our Lord, Himself, say…

“Take heed that no one leads you astray.  For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray…” ~Mt 24:4

BOTH Tradition AND Sacred Scripture ~ Good Theology!

The teaching magisterium of Christ’s Church reminds us…

“In many and various ways God spoke of old to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days He has spoken to us by a Son,” (cf. Heb 1: 1-2). Christ, the Son of God made man, is the Father’s one, perfect, and unsurpassable Word. In Him He has said everything; there will be no other word than this one.  St. John of the Cross, among others, commented strikingly on Hebrews 1:1-2:

In giving us His Son, his only Word (for He possesses no other), He spoke everything to us at once in this sole Word – and He has no more to say . . . because what He spoke before to the prophets in parts, He has now spoken all at once by giving us the All Who is His Son.

Any person questioning God or desiring some vision or revelation would be guilty not only of foolish behavior but also of offending Him, BY NOT FIXING HIS EYES ENTIRELY ON CHRIST and by living with the desire for some other novelty.

(emphasis added) ~CCC§65

Was not this TRUTH stressed in the very FIRST POST?  That God MUST be our CENTER, our eyes MUST be TRAINED ON CHRIST?  Without that FOCUS, many FALSE PROPHETS and FALSE CHRISTS will lead, and have led, many astray!

St. Paul’s reaction to those who would follow so readily a different gospel

I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and turning to a different gospel— not that there is another gospel, but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ.

Telling people that they will not suffer persecution, that they will not follow in the path of Christ… If they persecute Me, that will persecute you… Jn 15:21…

But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to that which we preached to you, let him be accursed.

And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is not strange if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds. (emphasis added) ~2Cor 11: 14-15 (Remember King Henry VIII?)

As we have said before, so now I say again, If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to that which you received, let him be accursed.

Am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still pleasing men, I should not be a servant of Christ. (emphasis added) ~Gal 1: 6-10

On the matter of revelations of men, the Church again teaches in her wisdom…

Christian faith cannot accept “revelations” that claim to surpass or correct the Revelation of which Christ is the fulfillment, as is the case in certain non-Christian religions and also in certain recent sects which base themselves on such “revelations.”

~CCC§67 (emphasis added)

Latter Day Saints, 7th Day Adventist, Jehovah Witness, just to name a few…

Then if any one says to you, ‘Lo, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There he is!’ do not believe it. For false Christs and false prophets will arise and show great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect. (Latter Day Saints)

Lo, I have told you beforehand.  So, if they say to you, ‘Lo, he is in the wilderness,’ do not go out; if they say, ‘Lo, he is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. (7th Day Adventist, Jehovah Witness)

For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of man.. ~Mt 24: 23-27

I Am the Way, the TRUTH, and the LIFE... Jn 14:6

The Church reminds us…

The Christian economy, therefore, since it is the new and definitive Covenant, will never pass away; and no new public revelation is to be expected before the glorious manifestation of our Lord Jesus Christ,” (cf. 1Tim 6:14; Titus 2:13).

Yet even if Revelation is already complete, it has not been made completely explicit; it remains for Christian faith gradually to grasp its full significance over the course of the centuries.

~CCC§66 (ending of quote; emphasis added)

"to help the Christian live more fully in their faith..."

The fullness of Revelation is in Christ and His Church – does that mean we understand everything?  Of course not!  That is why,”…it remains for the Christian faith gradually to grasp its full significance…” and why it’s sometimes necessary for Heaven to give us a helping in hand…

Lourdes – To help Christians understand Jesus IS God, because His mother was “conceived without sin”.  “Under the title ‘the Immaculate Conception,’ Our Lady called for penance and prayer for the conversion of sinners” as she appeared to a young, poor girl in southern France named, Bernadette Soubirous.  Stressing again the importance of prayer, something all Christians should readily do.

FatimaTo aid Christians in the understanding of the role of Christ and His Church in our violent world and how only He can bring TRUE PEACE.  Also gives us a better understanding of the importance of prayer – more specifically, the prayer of the Rosary: “Mary urged prayer of the rosary, penance for the conversion of sinners and consecration of Russia to her Immaculate Heart.”

Cracow, PolandDivine Mercy : …it is important to remember that this message of The Divine Mercy, revealed to St. Faustina and to our present generation is not new. It is a powerful reminder of who God is and has been from the very beginning. This truth that God is in His very nature Love and Mercy Itself, is given to us by our Judeo-Christian faith and God’s self-revelation…”  The fact that it followed so closely to the visions at Fatima give the message even more weight…

Of these APPROVED revelations, the Church says…

Throughout the ages, there have been so-called “private” revelations, some of which have been recognized by the authority of the Church. They do not belong, however, to the deposit of faith.

It is not their role to improve or complete Christ’s definitive Revelation, but to help live more fully by it in a certain period of history.

Guided by the magisterium of the Church, the sensus fidelium knows how to discern and welcome in these revelations whatever constitutes an authentic call of Christ or His saints to the Church.

CCC§67 (beginning of quote; emphasis added)

Proving once again – Apart from Rome, you’re on your own!

And we have the prophetic word made more sure. You will do well to pay attention to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, because no prophecy ever came by the impulse of man, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.
~2Peter 1: 19-21
