Have any of you wondered, “What happened to December 25th?”  Here we are, already approaching the New Year, with one more feast before the BIG ONE (Mother of God).  This Sunday is the celebration of the Holy Family!  Then NEXT Sunday we’ll celebrate the visitation of the Magi known as, Epiphany.  And if that weren’t enough, the FOLLOWING Sunday we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord – you know, the time just before He went into the desert for 40 days to be tempted by Satan before beginning His earthly ministry?

But back to today’s focus: the Holy Family.   The second reading today from 1 John 3, really does well to remind us that, no matter our own family situation, we HAVE a FAMILY in Christ Jesus!  God had MADE US a part of His family.  That’s no small matter!  Below is a simple reflection based exactly on the TRUTH of this amazing gift.

Happy Feast Day, Jesus, Mary, and Joseph!  Please, Pray for us!

1 John 3: 2-4, 5,-6, 9, 13,  21-24 (NAB, emphasis occasionally added)

2 Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we shall be has not yet been revealed. We do know that when it is revealed we shall be like Him,…

Glorified in His Glory and made PURE AND HOLY!

…for we shall see Him as He is. 3 Everyone who has this hope based on Him makes himself pure, as He is pure.

This is why we choose to dedicate ourselves to the service of Our Lady who also is in service to Our Lord, we desire purification.  Earth is just a “pit-stop”… an IMPORTANT “pit-stop” but not our final destination.

4 Everyone who commits sin commits lawlessness, for sin is lawlessness.

8 Whoever sins belongs to the devil, because the devil has sinned from the beginning. ~Jn 3: 8

Jesus said,…”You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” ~Jn 8:44, emphasis added

5 You know that He was revealed to take away sins, and in Him there is no sin. 6 No one who remains in Him sins; no one who sins has seen Him or known Him.

The following was reported at the time of St. Bernadette’s visitations with the Blessed Mother, back in 1858, by the local physician who had examined her after one of the visitations.  He asked Bernadette if she knew what a sinner was?

She said, “Certainly, Monsieur.  A sinner is one who LOVES evil.”  He was particularly impressed with this because she answered, “loves evil”, rather than ‘does evil’.

If we love Christ we will HATE SIN.  Though we may still sin, those who love Christ will desire to OVERCOME the TEMPTATION to sin and thus desire the purity that Jesus had NATURALLY.

9 No one who is begotten by God commits sin, because God’s seed remains in Him; He cannot sin because He is begotten by God.

After all, God CANNOT  SIN.

13 Do not be amazed, (then,) brothers, if the world hates you.

…The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know Him. ~ 1 John 3:1b, emphasis added

21 Beloved, if (our) hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence in God 22 and receive from Him whatever we ask, because we keep His commandments and do what pleases Him.

Not every one who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven. ~Mt 7: 21, emphasis added

23 And His commandment is this: we should believe in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another just as [Jesus] commanded us.

[Jesus] said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.  On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets.” ~Mt 22: 37-40, emphasis added

We know that we have passed from death to life because we love our brothers. Whoever does not love remains in death. ~1 Jn 3:14 (NAB)

24 Those who keep His commandments remain in Him, and He in them, and the way we know that He remains in us is from the Spirit that He gave us.

Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if any one hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with Me. ~Rev 3:20

May God continue to prepare OUR HEARTS for the coming of heaven!
