The Next Five Minutes…

Posted by Anne Elizabeth on October 10, 2012

Are you ready for the NEXT FIVE MINUTES???

Just as it is appointed to men to die once, after that comes judgment… ~Heb 9:27

In the last post, the readings focused on how we – as Children of God – should behave.  We should behave as if our judgment – that time when all will answer for what we have done and for what we have failed to do – were right around the corner.

Simply put, don’t do anything that you will regret in the next five minutes!  Steven Curtis Chapman has a song about “The Next Five Minutes”.  It’s on his 1999 Speechless album.  In it he talks about how the next five minutes might be all he has, so he has to live his life as if it were the last five minutes to do what is right.

Get this, if you are doing the two greatest commandments: (1) Loving God with all your heart, soul, and mind, and (2) Loving your neighbor as yourself  then your in a better position than most if indeed this were your last five minutes.  Tuesday evening’s reading in the Christian Prayer demonstrates this concept beautifully!

CHRISTIAN PRAYER: Tuesday, Evening Prayer, Week III: READING: Romans 12: 9-12 (emphasis added with commentary)

Your LOVE must BE SINCERE.  Detest what is evil; cling to what is GOOD.  Love one another with the affection of brothers…

Stressing again that we are all His Children, thus responsible to each other, “our brother’s keeper”, if you will…

Anticipate each other in showing RESPECT.  Do not grow slack but be fervent in spirit;  He whom you serve IS THE LORD.

REJOICE in HOPE, be PATIENT UNDER TRIAL, [and] PERSEVERE in PRAYER.

The Word of the Lord … Thanks be to God!

RESPONSORY: Through all eternity, O Lord, Your promise stands unshaken.

Of course, we we do begin to LOVE as we aught – allowing the Spirit of God to dwell freely in us – then we are more able to allow the PEACE of GOD to become center stage in our lives.  Then “the next five minutes” become an opportunity to offer more, participate more in the coming kingdom of the Father through His Son.

St. Paul fervently wished this for the people of God and often told them so…

CHRISTIAN PRAYER: Wednesday, Evening Prayer, Week III: READING: Eph 3: 17-21 (emphasis added)

May Christ dwell in your hearts through FAITH, and may CHARITY be the ROOT and FOUNDATION of your life.  Thus you will be able to grasp fully, with all the holy ones, the breadth, the length, the height and depth of Christ’s LOVE…

And experience this LOVE which surpasses all knowledge, so that YOU may ATTAIN to the fullness of God Himself.

To Him whose power is now at work in us can do immeasurably more than we ask or imagine – to Him be glory in the Church, and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, world without end.  Amen!

The Word of the Lord … Thanks be to God!

RESPONSORY: Claim me once more as Your own, [O] Lord, and have mercy on me.

Reading the above makes me think of Catherine’s bookAll that St. Paul says, about God doing more than we can imagine… that His goodness is beyond compare … that Faith and Charity are good foundations for a life well lived in Christ… All these principles are found in her book.  Have you checked it out yet?  It’s well worth the read!
