The Book of Tobit, chapter 13…

Posted by Anne Elizabeth on October 20, 2009

I’m re-publishing this text with some additional notes.  Perhaps it’s because of the anti-life measures that are currently up for vote in our Congress?  Perhaps it’s because we have such a great need for defending the Family as it is the source of life (children, our future) for our country and for society as a whole?  Whatever the reason, I think we need to pay attention to what is being said in the following passages and ask ourselves: Do we really understand what we’ve put ourselves into?

Recently we have read from the book of Tobit during daily Mass; hearing about Tobit’s life in exile, the bad fortune concerning his eyes and a certain flock of birds, about his good wishes for his son’s life, about the decision in heaven concerning Tobit’s son (Tobias) and that good fortune and finally about the healing of Tobit by Raphael, the mighty Archangel and guardian of Tobias. The one thing we do not hear is the prayer of rejoicing that Tobit writes after he is healed from his affliction of cataracts.

I was lead to read it, as I sat before My Blessed Lord in the Eucharist, and as soon as I began other scripture passages and writings began attaching themselves to what I read, making the reading more than just a song of praise, but one of a great reminder of the – power and majesty – mercy and grace – that exists within God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  I hope that which I have found will also bring forth from your hearts a healthy does of one of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit: Fear (awe, wonder, majesty) of the Lord.

Then Tobit wrote a prayer of rejoicing, and said:

“Blessed is God who lives for ever, and blessed is His kingdom. 2 For He afflicts, and He shows mercy;…

5 Remember then from what you have fallen, repent and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent. ~Revelation 2:5

…He leads down to Hades, and brings up again, and there is no one who can escape His hand. 3 Acknowledge Him before the nations, O sons of Israel; for He has scattered us among them. 4 Make His greatness known there, and exalt Him in the presence of all the living; because He is our Lord and God, He is our Father for ever.

14 But I have a few things against you: you have some there who hold the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, that they might eat food sacrificed to idols and practice immorality…Repent then. If not, I will come to you soon and war against them with the sword of my mouth . ~Rev 2:14-16

5 He will afflict us for our iniquities; and again He will show mercy, and will gather us from all the nations among whom you have been scattered.

And all the churches shall know that I am He who searches mind and heart, and I will give to each of you as your works deserve. ~Rev 2:23

6 If you turn to Him with all your heart and with all your soul (cf.Mt 22:37-38), to do what is true before Him, then He will turn to you and will not hide His face from you. But see what He will do with you;…

10 Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.~Rev 2:10

…give thanks to Him with your full voice. Praise the Lord of righteousness, and exalt the King of the ages. I give Him thanks in the land of my captivity, and I show His power and majesty to a nation of sinners. Turn back, you sinners, and do right before Him; who knows if He will accept you and have mercy on you?

Souls that make and appeal to My Mercy delight Me.  To such souls I grant even more graces that they ask. I cannot punish even the greatest sinner if he makes an appeal to My compassion,… before I come as a Just Judge, I first open wide the door of My Mercy.  He who refuses to pass through the door of My Mercy must pass through the door of My Justice.” ~Diary of St. Faustina,§1146.

7 I exalt my God; my soul exalts the King of heaven, and will rejoice in His majesty. 8 Let all men speak, and give Him thanks in Jerusalem.

“My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my savior…” ~Lk 1:46-47 NAB

9 O Jerusalem, the holy city, He will afflict you for the deeds of your sons, but again He will show mercy to the sons of the righteous.

“I know your works. Behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut; I know that you have but little power, and yet you have kept My word and have not denied My name…” ~Rev 3:8

10 Give thanks worthily to the Lord, and praise the King of the ages, that His tent may be raised for you again with joy. May He cheer those within you who are captives, and love those within you who are distressed, to all generations for ever.

68 “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for He has visited and redeemed His people,… 70 as He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets from of old, 71 that we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all who hate us; 72 to perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember His holy covenant,…” ~Lk 1:68, 70-72

11 Many nations will come from afar to the name of the Lord God, bearing gifts in their hands, gifts for the King of heaven.

Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, 2″Where is He who has been born king of the Jews?” … and he sent them to Bethlehem, … they saw the Child with Mary,His mother, and they fell down and worshiped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered Him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. ~Mt 2:2a,8a,11b
