Repent and Believe… part II

Posted by Anne Elizabeth on March 1, 2009

Saturday’s readings come from the Prophet Isaiah and from the Gospel of  Luke, the Evangelist.  Once again, the connections are clear and the message the same: REPENT and BELIEVE for the time of Salvation is at hand; as today’s Gospel from Mark reminds us. =-)

Mark 1:15

15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent, and believe in the gospel.”

Isaiah 58: (1), 9-14; Luke 5: 27-32

1 Cry aloud, spare not, lift up your voice like a trumpet; declare to my people their transgression, to the house of Jacob their sins.

5 …He (Jesus) went out, and saw a tax collector, named Levi, sitting at the tax office; and He said to him, “Follow me.” 28 And he left everything, and rose and followed Him.

9 Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer; you shall cry, and He will say, Here I am. “If you take away from the midst of you the yoke, the pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness,

10 if you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, ( cf. Mt. 25:35-36) then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday.

29 And Levi made Him a great feast in his house; and there was a large company of tax collectors and others sitting at table with them.

11 And the LORD will guide you continually, and satisfy your desire with good things, * and make your bones strong; …

30 And the Pharisees and their scribes murmured against his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” (Forgetting the fact that, they too, were also there eating and drinking…)

31 And Jesus answered them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick; 32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

…and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.

12 And your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; you shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to dwell in.

13 “If you turn back your foot from the Sabbath, from doing your pleasure on My holy day, (do you work just as hard on Sunday as you do Mon-Sat?) and call the Sabbath a delight and the holy day of the LORD honorable; (do you attend Mass on Sunday with Joy and Thanksgiving, or do you do this with drudgery and resentment stemming from an obligation within your heart?) if you honor it, not going your own ways, or seeking your own pleasure, or talking idly; (do you gather after Mass to gossip with your friends about who wore what or who did what to whom?)

14 then you shall take delight in the LORD, and I will make you ride upon the heights of the earth; (cf Mt 22:37; Jn 9-10) I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.”

Are you stuck this Lent of what you may give up? May I make a humble suggestion?

Why not try giving up one really bad habit?

Of course, you’re going to need a lot of help with this.  After all, if it were that easy to give up a bad habit, you wouldn’t have it in the first place, yes?

Here is where the GRACES of GOD are REALLY IMPORTANT!  But how does one receive them?  By clearing out their hearts so that they can receive them.  How does one go about doing that? EASY!!!

It’s called CONFESSION!  Confession does actually do the job required for clearing out the bad so that you can receive the good!

The Recipe IS:

1) Go to Confession – make it a good one.  Really take the time to THINK about your sins so that you can actually CONFESS your sins. =-)

2) Open your heart WIDE to Jesus so that He can send you the Holy Spirit and FILL YOU TO THE RIM with His MANY GRACES as you receive your absolution (forgiveness of your sins).

3) Once again, here is a good place to begin that cleaning and clearing process necessary for the Kingdom of God to enter into your heart, changing you for the better.  ps… Scroll down the page for specifics.

May God Bless you on your Journey this Lent and we prepare ourselves for His Resurrection at Easter!
